The consortium

Il Consorzio - Consorzio Vino Chianti
Consortium: from Latin consortium, der. of consors-ortis “those who share the same destiny”.

Land, sweat, sacrifice, courage, ingenuity, tradition, knowledge, nature: we have no indication of a precise moment in history when the indissoluble link between the fields tended by man and everything necessary to produce “Chianti” became apparent.

The origin of the concept of “Chianti”, even before the wine, is lost in the mists of time: a long and impervious journey made up of people, towns battling with one another, art and breathtaking landscapes. From the ancient civilisations that have inhabited this region, from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance and the modern era, viticulture has always been carried out in Tuscany.

In 1927, a group of winegrowers founded the “Consorzio del Vino Chianti”, one of the first associations of winemakers in Italy. Its mission was to protect and promote Chianti D.O.C.G. wineas it is known in Italy and abroad by ancient tradition”.

Since 1932, the territory falling under the aegis of the Consortium has consisted of six provinces, home to some of the world’s most beautiful cities: Florence, Siena, Arezzo, Pisa, Pistoia and Prato.

This “love story” between man and nature now involves about 3,000 wineries spread across an area of about 15,500 hectares of vineyards, with an average annual production of about 100 million bottles. That’s right: One hundred million bottles a year.
