The Consorzio Vino Chianti (Chianti Wine Consortium) was formed in 1927 by a group of winegrowers from the provinces of Florence, Siena, Arezzo and Pistoia.

The initial production zone defined by Ministerial Decree in 1932 has been amended several times: first by Decree of the President of the Republic on 9 August 1967, with the addition of some neighbouring areas, falling within the provinces of Arezzo, Florence, Pisa, Pistoia and Siena.

In 1984, thanks to the skilful work of the winegrowers and the activism of the sector’s collateral industry, Chianti was acknowledged as Chianti D.O.C.G., by Decree of the President of the Republic dated 2 July 1984.

Today, 3,000 producers, who occupy over 15,500 hectares of vineyards and produce 800,000 hectolitres of Chianti of different zones and types, are protected by the Consortium. The organisation’s representational activity has earned it “ERGA OMNES” acknowledgement, with assignment of the performance of operations of defence, promotion, enhancement, information of the consumer and general oversight of the interests relating to D.O.C.G. “Chianti”, by Decree of the Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies dated 3 September 2012, renewed with Ministerial Decree no. 62147 dated 17/09/2015.

The Consortium promotes, enhances, informs consumers and generally oversees the interests pursuant to art. 17, paragraphs 1 and 4, of Legislative Decree no. 61/2010 for DOCG “Chianti” and DOC “Colli dell’Etruria Centrale” and “Vin Santo del Chianti”.

The activity envisaged by the law and performed by Consorzio del Vino Chianti is the promotion and enhancement of the Denomination and its territory, by participating in projects, in Italy and abroad, to promote and encourage the appreciation of Chianti wine, in its various specific forms, both on consolidated markets and in emerging new countries. With the “erga omnes” acknowledgement envisaged by Legislative Decree no. 61 dated 8 April 2010, the charges of this activity of promotion and enhancement of the denomination are extended to all members of the chain, regardless of whether or not they are members of the consortium.

As imposed by the above ministerial assignment, the Consortium is the organisation which schedules the timing of growth, deceleration and anything else necessary to the correct management of the denomination in relation to production and market requirements.

Also in application of art. 17 of the aforesaid Legislative Decree no. 61 of 2010, the Consortium controls the denomination during the commercialisation of the product. Indeed, the Consortium, in the person of specific controllers, takes samples of Chianti D.O.C.G. wine from the market, in compliance with precise control plans approved by the Ministry, to check that the product contained in the bottles meets the requirements of the production regulations. This is carried out in the interests of producers and as a guarantee for consumers.

In August 2011, by specific decree, the Consortium was assigned the role of sole manager of the governmental numbered neck labels, in compliance with the agreement with the company Toscana Certificazione Agroalimentare S.r.l.– T.C.A. – as manager of production chain control.

Technical and informative assistance is supplied to the member estates during the whole wine production process.

With a provision dated 7 April 1998, the Ministry for Agricultural Policies assigned Consorzio Vino Chianti the task of overseeing the denominations of controlled origin “Vin Santo del Chianti” and “Colli dell’Etruria Centrale“, which are made in the same production zone as Chianti and to which the Consortium extends its usual services of checking, control and assistance.

The denomination “Colli dell’Etruria Centrale” joins the d.o.c.g. Chianti.

Acknowledgement of the denomination “Vin Santo del Chianti” marks an important step in the promotion of this product, which represents so much for the traditions and productive capacities of the Chianti zone, for which the Consortium has fought for so long.

Its checks regard the entire production cycle – from the choice of the grapes to vinification, from verifying the chemical, physical and organoleptic characteristics to bottling – and fidelity to the criteria imposed in 1967 by the d.o.c. and the d.o.c.g., acknowledged in 1984.

The Consortium’s work and that of its members – producers, historical estates, traders and cooperative wineries – guarantees the utmost transparency of the production and market of Chianti d.o.c.g.
